Triumphant Italy Wins FEI Nations Cup of Rome CSIO5*

Italy made it an incredible two in a row on home turf at Piazza Di Siena on Friday, May 25, 2018 when they won the Intesa SanPaolo FEI Nations Cup CSIO5*.

Nine nations lined up for the prestigious class in the heart of Rome, Italy on newly resurfaced turf. After Round 1, a three way tie on zero faults between the USA, Switzerland and Italy, setting the stage for a super showdown in Round 2.

It did come down to the very last round for the Italian team of Luca Marziani and Tokyo Du Soleil (Montender), Giula Martinen with Verdine SZ (Verdi), Emanuele Gaudiano and Caspar 232 (Berlin) and Bruno Chimirri with Tower Mouche (Diamant De Semilly).

With Switzerland and the USA both on 8 faults and Italy on 4, a rail would have forced a jumpoff. But Chimirri, who was able to save his horse in Round 1 after the first three Italian riders all jumped clear, pulled off a clear of his own as last to go.

With that, the joyous Italians had reason to celebrate another Nations Cup win, one year after winning on home soil for the first time in 90 years. The USA team of Laura Kraut, Spencer Smith, Beezie Madden and Mclain Ward used their drop score in both rounds to erase Smithís eight-fault rounds, but a single rail each from Madden and Kraut would put them into equal 2nd with Switzerland.

Guerdat was also able to save his horse for Round 2 when his teammates all went clear in Round 1, but as anchor he was unable to return the favor, pulling a critical rail with Alamo (Ukato).

Germany placed equal 4th with Sweden and Canada, on 12 faults. The Netherlands took up 7th place, and New Zealand moved up a placing for 8th, while France finished last after Roger Yves Bost didnít start in Round 2. Kevin Staut was eliminated in Round 2, which didnít give France enough riders to post a complete score.
